The inhalation of asbestos fiber has been associated with numerous types of chronic and deadly lung diseases such as the cancer mesothelioma. Asbestos fibers are invisible, tasteless and odorless so people are unknowingly exposed to this deadly mineral.
Tragically, manufacturers and suppliers knew, or should have known, from the medical literature available that their products containing asbestos would result in an epidemic of asbestos-related disease such as mesothelioma decades after the exposure occurred.
Although the cancer malignant mesothelioma is uncommon, it is sadly no longer rare, and is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases as it is both difficult to diagnose and poorly responsive to therapy.
Fatal lung diseases including mesothelioma have also occurred among family members of workers exposed to asbestos. Families have also been exposed to asbestos when workers were engaged in asbestos removal operations.
