Asbestos Diseases
Asbestos diseases originate by breathing in asbestos fibers, a natural mineral that was widely used in industries such as construction.
Primary diseases caused by inhaling asbestos fibers are asbestosis (scarring of lung tissue), lung cancer such as mesothelioma (cancer of the chest and lung linings) and pleural disease (which can include lung calcification and fluid on the lungs - pleural effusion).
Thousands die of these asbestos related diseases each year and it is expected that the death toll will not peak until until at least 2020.
Given the widespread use of asbestos by industry, people affected are usually plumbers, shipyard workers and builders, but nurses, teachers and children have also been put at risk because asbestos was used when constructing hospitals and schools.
The families of people who worked directly with asbestos products have also been affected as the asbestos fibers were brought into the home on the workers clothes.
Asbestos related disease is commonly associated with shortness of breath but additional significant symptoms include a persistent cough, tightening of the chest or chest pain, nail malformation and thickening of toes and fingers.
Another major characteristic of asbestos related disease is that it can take up to 40 years before symptoms show.
