Can my family get mesothelioma?
Workers from many industries can unknowingly carry hazardous substances such as asbestos from work to their home via their clothes, skin, hair, tools and vehicles.
As a consequence, families of these workers have been exposed to the same hazardous substances and have developed occupationally linked diseases, including mesothelioma.
Following studies of home contamination from 28 countries and 36 states in the United States the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published a report in 1995 on this problem.
The report found that home contamination was a worldwide problem and had resulted in the mesothelioma based deaths of at least 100 family members in the US. The report further showed that although regulation should lower the number of deaths over time asbestos is still a real and current risk for workers and their families.
To help reduce the risk the report suggested the following:
- use good safety practices to reduce exposure
- leave soiled clothes at work
- change clothes before leaving work
- store nonwork clothes away from work clothes
- shower before leaving work
- do not take tools, scrap, packaging, and similar items home
- inform workers
- launder work clothes separately, and
- prevent family members from visiting the work area
