What are asbestos and mesothelioma?
The term asbestos is used to describe a range of mineral fibers that are recognized for their strength and fire-resistant properties.
Due to these attributes asbestos has been used for centuries as fire proofing.
Despite early correlations between asbestos and ill health, its use increased as more and more uses of the fiber were found.
As well as being used for thermal insulation and fire proofing, asbestos has been used in areas such as in brake and clutch linings for the automotive industry.
Although asbestos use is now overseen due to the introduction of legal powers, over two-million tons were produced in the year 2000 - most for use in poorer countries where health and safety standards might not be as stringent.
One of the attributes of asbestos fibers is that they are often so small that they can only be seen by a microscope.
Being so small makes it easy for these minute fibers to float, unseen, in the air and consequently easily breathed in.
Once consumed they can become lodged deep in our lungs.
These buried fibers have been clinically proven to dramatically increase the chances of developing lung cancer and especially mesothelioma (cancer of the bodies' cavity linings).
